by, Elevated Existence

Well-known yoga enthusiast and hip-hop mogul (who has graced Elevated Existence’s cover twice) Russell Simmons is launching an expansive yoga line called Tantris, which will include women’s and men’s activewear, meditation beads, yoga mats, pillows and scented candles, GlobalGrind.com reported.

“After doing yoga, I feel alive and awakened,” Simmons told WWD. “I want to give people that feeling or to teach people who want to learn more about yoga. I see yoga studios starting to grow and yoga classes getting more crowded. I see [yoga] brands continuing to grow. I’m doing this because of my passion for yoga not because I’m that kind of business guy.”

After its release in department stores, specialty stores, health clubs and spas this fall, Simmons plans to open Tantris stores, yoga studios, juice bars and even a vegan restaurant, the website reported.

The Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF) is doubling its initial allocation of support for the “Top Achievers Program” in Botswana. DEF awarded $50,000 to the program in September 2011; and has allocated another $100,000 this month, furthering its commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in diamond producing countries in Africa. DEF’s grant empowers students from Botswana with tuition support at universities around the world. According to Russell Simmons, co-founder of the Diamond Empowerment Fund and advisory board chair, “This gift is a commitment from us to empower African youth and further Botswana’s vision of a thriving economy built on the responsible use of its natural resources to benefit its people.” Varda Shine, CEO of Diamond Trading Company, and DEF’s governing board member commended the efforts being made by the diamond industry at large and specifically DEF’s work in Botswana. As the DTC completes its own move to Botswana by the end of 2013, she understands the importance of business and social responsibility to a country’s well being. States Ms. Shine, “The Diamond Empowerment Fund clearly understands that access to education and incubation of future leaders leads to sustained progress, economic growth and prosperity”.

The Top Achievers program represents a groundbreaking partnership between DEF and the Government of Botswana’s Ministry of Education. Top Achievers is a program that selects the top high school students countrywide in Botswana, and affords them the opportunity to study at a university of their choice anywhere in the world. Graduates then return to Botswana to contribute to its economic, social and political development.

Botswana Education Minister, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi emphasized the importance of what these advanced degrees will have on shaping the future growth of Botswana, while Ms. Linah Moholo, Governor of the Bank of Botswana and a member of the Diamond Empowerment Fund’s Advisory Board said, “Affording these young, talented students the opportunity to be exposed to rigorous curriculum focused on development, macro-economics, political theory and social entrepreneurship will further the growth in our country for generations.” Agrees DEF board president, Phyllis Bergman, “The ‘Top Achievers Program’ is in line with the Diamond Empowerment Fund’s vision of creating a self-sustainable economic future for Africa.”

The Top Achievers Program is DEF’s third beneficiary. The first is the CIDA City Campus, a business college in Johannesburg, South Africa, that is free to attendees with the requirement that they return to their native villages and teach for a period of time after graduation. The second is the African Leadership Academy, a university preparatory school in Johannesburg that draws students from all 54 countries in Africa, and emphasizes leadership skills, African History, and entrepreneurial skills. DEF provides scholarships to all students from diamond--producing nations.

UniRush LLC, the marketer of the prepaid card RushCard and IDology, a leading identity verification provider, today announced a partnership to better serve the payments industry.

Partnership provides a faster and easier way to id proof cardholders while meeting CIP compliance

UniRush LLC, the marketer of the prepaid card RushCard and IDology, a leading identity verification provider, today announced a partnership to better serve the payments industry. UniRush is using IDology’s identity proofing solutions within its card application process to verify consumer identities. By using IDology’s solution, UniRush is able to approve more cards faster while also meeting the compliance regulations of its issuing bank.

“IDology’s solutions allow us to automate and direct every aspect of the authentication process for new card applications,” said Ram Palaniappan, general manager of RushCard. “As a result, we have increased the amount of cards being issued while meeting the compliance regulations of our issuing bank. Having insight into the identity verification process of our applicants has been a huge benefit to us. With IDology we are able to monitor and control the CIP process and report back to our bank very easily. ”

Having launched one of the first ever prepaid Visa debit cards, UniRush, LLC, has revolutionized the payments industry. IDology’s services are helping UniRush grow their cardholder members by verifying the identity of those applying for a card in a quick and easy way. IDology’s services are designed specifically to address the demographics of the prepaid industry and find more people than other identity verification services. This allows UniRush to offer more people the freedom and security of having a prepaid Visa card to make payments, track day-to-day spending, and manage their monthly finances.

Using IDology’s ExpectID suite of identity verification solutions, UniRush is able to rapidly and cost-effectively verify someone is who they say they are. IDology’s solutions provide a comprehensive identity verification solution to CIP pass individuals and will automatically escalate transactions to a higher level of verification when needed. This unique way of escalating transactions provides more opportunities to approve activations without increasing processing times or requiring manual reviews.

“UniRush is an industry leading program manager in the prepaid market and we are excited about this opportunity,” said John Dancu, CEO of IDology. “Our goal is to bridge the divide between compliance and revenue by helping program mangers comply with their issuing bank’s rules without slowing down the rate of approvals.”

This past Thursday (Mar. 2), blocks away from Madison Square Park, President Obama hosted a magnificent fundraiser dinner for his top campaign contributors at New York’s famed ABC Kitchen. The crowd was filled with a mix of both artisans and philanthropists. Campaign supporters were treated to a customized menu by celebrity chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and an after party hosted by Comic-In-Cheif, Aziz Ansari and music from The Roots.
</sup>

Russell Simmons, the prolific Obama supporter, was on hand at last night’s festivities and shared his thoughts on the 2012 Obama campaign exclusively with VIBE.com–Robbie Sokolowsky

VIBE: You are supporting the Obama election campaign for a second time. What is the biggest difference between 2008 campaign and 2012 campaign?

Russell Simmons: 2008 was great! The 2012 campaign is only different in that now we’ve got something to protect – which I’d argue is even more motivating. We need four more years so President Obama can continue to fight for the middle class and underserved communities.

You recently designed a custom polo shirt for the ”Runway To Win” initiative alongside fashion elite Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu. Talk about the strategy and success of this initiative.

I designed a shirt for the campaign in 2008 and agreed to participate again when I was asked this year. Like I’ve said before, I am really inspired that we have a President that appreciates the artistic community and “Runway To Win” was the community’s way of showing its support for the President. Culture has always led the way for great change to occur in this country and once again artists are using their expression to raise awareness about what we believe is important.

Will you be collaborating with any recording artists on a similar music initiative for the Obama campaign?

Nothing is in the works yet, but we’ll just have to wait and see. The President inspires so many Americans – who knows what will come together.

Which issues do you see as the most important to be addressed during this campaign?

I think it all comes back to this issue of values and compassion. The President is fighting to restore that basic sense of security and fairness that so many people feel we’ve lost. President Obama is a guy who believes that we are our brother’s and sister’s keeper – that we’re all in this together. The President has made tremendous progress on a number of issues from ending the war in Iraq to job creation and Wall Street reform, however there are many of his policies that need time to go into effect and we have a lot more work to do. It’s my hope that in his second term, the President will turn a significant amount of his attention towards getting the money out of politics and returning our democracy back to the people.

What is the most effective way for our VIBE readers to show support for the President and his re-election campaign and get the message out?

Well, the easiest thing you can do is to talk to your friends and neighbors – on the street, at the dinner table, anywhere. Talk about what’s at stake in 2012. Listen, President Obama can’t do it alone – he needs us again this time, he needs us out there working hard to get him re-elected. And stay informed. I always tell people to go to the campaign’s website -www.barackobama.com - to see people’s stories from across the country and get the latest.

Ubuntu Charity Benefit, Art Show and Film Screening to benefit Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation – Proceeds benefit the Rush Philanthropic Arts Education & Gallery Programs

Ubuntu Charity Benefit, Art Show and Film Screening to benefit Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation – Proceeds benefit the Rush Philanthropic Arts Education & Gallery Programs

The Ubuntu Charity Benefit, will take place on March 1, 2012 and include an art exhibit, film screening and live auction featuring emerging African artists. The event will take place at the historic LA Artcore Gallery & Art Center located at 120 Judge John Aiso Street in Los Angeles, opposite MOCA downtown. A portion of proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering emerging and underrepresented artists.

“I am honored that the Ubuntu Charity Benefit has chosen Rush Philanthropic as this year’s beneficiary. The old Ubuntu adage that “I am because you are” has never been more true. When we acknowledge the connectedness of all of us, and sow good seeds by supporting emerging artists, we uplift and empower entire communities,” says Russell Simmons, Rush Philanthropic Co-founder.

Confirmed celebrity guests attending the event include Rosario Dawson, Brian Grazer, Meagan Good, Eva Amurri, Brett Ratner, Rockmund Dunmar, Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker, among others. The benefit will take place at the historic LA Artcore, which was an abandoned Japanese union church recently transformed into a non-profit art center dedicated to developing the careers of visual artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, bringing innovative contemporary art to the public.

Event organizers Gloria Huwiler and Tulsi Karpio produced the Ubuntu Charity Benefit as an effort to promote diversity in the film and art community by showcasing work from talented African artists. Gloria Huwiler, is an actress and philanthropist dedicated to promoting performing and fine artists in Africa. Raised in Zambia, she has a deep commitment to developing artistic work from Africa, and helping the careers of fellow creatives on the continent. Tulsi Karpio has worked extensively in the art and philanthropic worlds, curating and promoting Latin American Art.

Event partners, Supperclub, will coordinate food and entertainment for the evening with exquisite hors d’oeuvres and African-inspired specialty cocktails from our sponsors Remy Martin, Highland Park, The Macallan and Brugal. In addition to the artwork, Ford Models will partner with LA designer Mike Vensel to create an African inspired fashion installation, while music and dance troupe Balle Fette bu Senegal perform live. Each guest will receive a complimentary gift bag from Blissmo, filled with unique eco-friendly products. The event sponsors, AEG and John Rubey, President AEG Network LIVE, Lafarge and Joumana Rizk are committed to promoting performing and fine artists from Africa.

The fundraising portion of the benefit features an art-themed live auction benefiting the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation’s Artist in Residency program. For one year, an African artist will be chosen to train and gain exposure at the Rush Galleries in New York, made possible by the Artist in Residency opportunity. The exhibit and live auction features pieces from Los Angeles artist Azul “213” Amaral, local artist/actor Rockmond Dunbar, award winning Zambian artists Mwamba Mulangala, Starry Mwaba, Vincentio Phiri, Lutanda Mwamba, Geoffrey Phiri, veteran artist and curator William Bwalya Miko, and Zambian sculptors The Zeta Brothers and Rikki Lungu.

The screening of critically acclaimed BAFTA-nominated short film ‘Mwansa The Great’ will take place following the live auction. Zambian writer, director and producer Rungano Nyoni takes us on a journey through the eyes of a Zambian boy and shows us the spirit of playfulness and love along with the sadness and hardships of growing up in Africa. ‘Mwansa The Great’ premiered in March 2011 at Cineposible Film Festival and has been awarded twelve prizes and two jury special mentions. The film has made appearances at more than fifty film festivals worldwide.

Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is dedicated to providing inner-city youth with significant exposure and access to the arts, and to offering exhibition opportunities for underrepresented artists and artists of color. Rush was founded in 1995 by three brothers: Danny Simmons, visual artist and community builder; media mogul Russell Simmons; and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons of the legendary hip-hop group Run-DMC. Their goal was to fill the gap that the disenfranchised and people of color faced in both accessing the arts and exhibition opportunities. Over the past 16 years, Rush has developed a broad base of friends, collaborators and supporters dedicated to addressing these issues. Designed to inspire students, provide positive alternatives to high-risk behaviors and support increased academic performance, Rush Education programs directly serve 2,300 students annually. In addition, each year Rush exhibits the work of 40 to 50 emerging and community-based artists in its galleries; welcomes over 10,000 gallery visitors; and provides unique opportunities for young people interested in careers in the arts. Rush currently operates galleries and arts education programs at Rush Arts Gallery in Manhattan and Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn.

Inspired by famous saxophone and trumpet riffs in a great jazz songs, the Riff collection offers a modern take on retro standards, with a high bridge to create a more modern and European look and spring hinges for a comfortable fit. Hubbard and Coltrane combine modern and retro design elements in perfect harmony.
Hubbard is a semi-rimless acetate frame with a modified rectangular eyeshape. Hubbard features a metal temple embellishment with an argyle inspired laser treatment and a semi-rimless metal bridge insert to streamline the frame design. Hubbard is available in Tortoise and Black.
Coltrane is a combination frame with a full rim double laminate acetate front. The metal temples highlight the argyle pattern with an epoxy fill, to create a bold unique look. Available in Black and Blue, Coltrane’s oversized eyeshape brings a fashionable twist to this funky frame.

Russell Simmons on Tuesday offered another kind of distraction from Fashion Week: a Valentine’s Day-themed benefit luncheon for the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

Bloomberg, by Amanda Gordon

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) — New York Fashion Week ends today, leaving us with some quirky memories.

Last night Junk Food Clothing presented its collection of T-shirts inspired by the board game Monopoly.

There was plenty of Monopoly money on the white Astroturf runway at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea.

Mr. Monopoly — model Josh Holland — strutted down in a top hat, cane and velvet coat by Andrew Charles, doing a “swag step,” which he described as “feeling like a million bucks.”

Then came a model in a white T-shirt with a red-glitter question mark, just like the “Chance” spot on the Monopoly board. Another’s tee bore a faded pink-and-lavender railroad car.

The company showed 11 designs by artist Aaron Rose. They will be priced at $45 to $70 and available for sale next month, said Andrei Najjar, Junk Food Clothing’s vice president in charge of marketing and brand strategy.

Buyers at Kitson, the hip Los Angeles boutique, had the idea to bring the board game to life. Junk Food Clothing, which sells at Kitson, then made a licensing agreement with Hasbro, which produces the game that’s been taking hours to play since 1935. Junk Food Clothing has 5,600 designs and 800 licenses, said Najjar.

The show stealer, though, was the Cairn terrier named Milo who accompanied the model posing as a banker.

Nemcova, Adele

Russell Simmons on Tuesday offered another kind of distraction from Fashion Week: a Valentine’s Day-themed benefit luncheon for the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

There were models in the room, including Petra Nemcova, Arizona Muse and Andi Muise. But children participating in the foundation’s arts programs had the spotlight, performing a dance to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

Soledad O’Brien helped coax $23,000 in donations from guests, to support arts-education programs for 2,300 children and teenagers.

“Many people think fashion is superficial,” said Nemcova, founder of the Happy Hearts Fund, which helps rebuild schools after natural disasters. “From my experience, because we work on a beauty, exterior level, people are looking for something meaningful on the inside.”

Meanwhile, Elettra Wiedemann, a model and London School of Economics graduate, set up a temporary restaurant called Goodness to benefit City Harvest.

Food for Thesis

The pop-up eatery served lunch from Saturday to Tuesday inside the restaurant Robert at the Museum of Arts and Design.

Wiedemann wrote her LSE thesis (for which she earned distinction) on feeding urban populations, so she wanted to support a charity that helps feed New York’s hungry.

“The ability to say no to food is a luxury,” said Wiedemann Saturday after lunch with her mom, Isabella Rossellini. “Goodness is an opportunity to celebrate the abundance we have.”

Alain Allegretti, chef of La Promenade des Anglais, had some dishes on the menu.

“I have a kale salad, which sounds good, but it’s bad,” he said. “I added candied walnuts, prosciutto and a pomegranate dressing.”

Wilson garnered national attention during Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the largest contemporary art fairs in the country. He bested 4,000 other contestants to win the national Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. Sponsored by media mogul Russell Simmons' arts foundation and Barcardi.

Associated Press

NEW YORK — A black skillet, a heat gun, pigments and beeswax take up a corner of LeRone Wilson’s art studio in Harlem.

They are simple tools and materials that his skillful hands use to create unique abstract artworks in beeswax — richly textured, three-dimensional coral-like sculptural paintings in warm tones of yellow, gold and white and in metallic silver and bronze of varying shapes and sizes.

Wilson’s use of molten beeswax — called encaustic — is based on an ancient technique used in hieroglyphics. It requires a great deal of patience and control, with one piece taking up to six months to complete.

While he modestly claims he’s still learning, the 43-year-old artist is a master in its use — a medium he has applied in art for 16 years.

In December, Wilson garnered national attention during Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the largest contemporary art fairs in the country. He bested 4,000 other contestants to win the national Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. The recognition is a result of his perseverance even in the face of hardship.

Sponsored by media mogul Russell Simmons’ arts foundation and Barcardi, Bombay’s parent company, the prize aims to give exposure to midcareer and emerging artists.

Wilson’s winning piece, “A Path Through the Sky,” is among 16 of his works that will be exhibited at Simmons’ Rush Arts Gallery in Chelsea from Thursday until March 16. Works from the only other Bombay prize winner, Miguel Ovalle, another New Yorker who creates installations out of foam core, will be featured alongside Wilson’s.

Wilson’s works will be offered for sale, from $2,800 to $15,000.

Of the thousands of pieces shown during Art Basel week, Wilson was the only artist to use encaustic, said Andre Guichard, Bombay’s national curator.

“I thought that was very interesting considering it’s one of the oldest archival mediums in existence,” he said.

There are other artists who use beeswax, including pop art artist Jasper Johns, but usually with other solvents like oils, pastels and newsprint.

“I don’t use any other salvage in the wax,” said Wilson, adding that he began using it after a friend gave him some beeswax that he didn’t want.

“It’s a fun process because it’s very sculptural,” he said.

Wilson’s technique sounds simple enough: Melt wax with resin and pigment in a hot skillet to fuse it into one solvent, then apply it using a palette knife to build up patterns and texture onto a wood panel.

“It takes a lot of technical skill for it to look this way,” Wilson said of the work hanging on the walls of the small light-filled studio he shares with another artist in a Harlem building overlooking a street of multi-story apartment buildings and older brownstones.

“You have to be patient,” Wilson said.

And you have to be quick.

“It dries very quickly. It turns hard as soon as you apply it,” explained Wilson, who studied sculpture and architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For some of the works, he carves the wax “almost like it’s clay. That gives me different depths to the piece or different images that I want to portray,” he said.

His goal is to create something beautiful without disrupting the purity of the material.

A deeply religious man, Wilson said “A Path Through the Sky,” came as a sign from God during a particularly rough patch in his life. Speaking about it at his studio last week, Wilson choked up talking about it.

“God was telling me to let go and let him handle it. He said, ‘look up,’ and I looked up at the sky and I saw the image of what I created for the competition,” he said.

The 26-inch by 26-inch cratered white surface depicts clouds moving in a very textural, minimal direction with a 2- to 3-inch band of wax through the center designating a path.

“It came to me that we all have our different paths in life … We don’t know what today will bring, you just have to hold steadfast and get through it,” he said.

Guichard said Wilson’s story will resonate with viewers.

“There’s always a time and space where you feel it’s God’s push that keeps you going, helps you get through trials and tribulations,” he said. “‘A Path Through the Sky’” appropriately depicts that message that we can all relate to as viewers.”

It wasn’t the first time the artist faced a challenge.

Several years ago, unable to sell his work or pay the rent for a storage facility where he kept his artist’s tools and work, Wilson lived in a homeless shelter for 5 to 6 months. And perhaps worse, the contents of his storage unit were auctioned off by the facility owner.

Winning the competition was “part of God’s blueprint,” Wilson said, and the reason he signs all his work “In His Name.” It also is the title of his newest work, a 2-foot-by-2-foot square creation that has no texture but has text fused into the wax — the words “In His Name” written in marker across the entire surface.

“It’s in him I get my concepts and titles … through scripture. And this work belongs to him because he gave it to me. No one has … ever done anything else to put it in my soul and in my heart other than him,” he said.

Wilson’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the African American Museum in Dallas. Some of it is displayed on the walls of New York restaurants and he said a Chicago collector owns 30 of the sculptures. He has also been commissioned by New York interior designer Jennifer Post to create several pieces, some of which have been featured in Architectural Digest magazine.

Going forward, Wilson said he wants to continue to use the ancient organic material to create modern works of a larger scale.

Rush Art Gallery curator Charlotte Mouquin called Wilson’s use of the material “something new and refreshing.”

“LeRone’s technique is rare,” she said. “It’s got a fragility … and at the same time it has the simplicity of poetic concept.”

Carbon NYC will host its third annual, highly anticipated charity fundraising event, the Spring Charity Soirée on May 11, 2012. Carbon will take over Center 548 (548 West 22nd Street) to put on an artistic feast for the senses complete with live performances by award winning artists, a contemporary art exhibition and sale curated by Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, New York’s top DJs, a silent auction of one-of-a-kind experiences and luxury items, hors d’oeuvres by renowned caterers and a sponsored open bar. The fundraising event will support arts education and access in underserved New York communities by raising funds for the education programs of Lincoln Center and, in part, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

The event comes on the heels of 2011’s sold-out event, which raised $100,000 for Bronx-based CampInteractive and featured a performance by award-winning musical artist, Jose Conde, a contemporary art auction, two internationally renowned DJs, Lili Lamar and Brendan Fallis, gourmet hors d’oeuvres from Betel, and bar sponsored by MEDEA Vodka, Tanteo, Chivas Regal, and Stella Artois. In 2010, Carbon supported charity: water through their Charity Soirée and has since made a commitment to spearhead at least one major philanthropic initiative annually. Tickets will be available for purchase starting in early March for $250 or VIP table service for $5,000 at AboutLincolnCenter.org/carbon-nyc.
